Izquierda Unida de Navarra-Nafarroako Ezker Batua and Izquierda Unida-Ezker Batua of the Basque Autonomous Community, from its pacifist and federalist perspective, commits itself to both the principles and the objectives of Elkarri´s Peace Conference. Our joint commitment is to peace, based on the need to make progress with a firm will to reach agreements.
We consider both Communities to be areas for decision-making, from which democratic participation may be employed to bring an end to politically motivated violence.
In this sense, democracy is the strength that guides the initiatives of both federations, based on the strictest possible respect for all human rights.
For democratic and ethical reasons, one of the fundamental elements on the road to peace is the respect for all human rights, and particularly the right to life and security of person as the source of all rights. This is the basis for our complete rejection and condemnation of ETA violence.
Finally, we reaffirm the need for a social and political agreement that will structure peaceful co-existence and reconciliation, based on non-violence, dialogue, and respect for the freely expressed will of the people of Navarra and the Basque Country.
For these reasons, our emphasis on dialogue as a basic instrument for understanding, and as a key element that helps to undermine the arguments of those practice or legitimise violence. We are convinced that peace is possible.
